Our students are the energizing force behind LaGuardia. They seek knowledge, skills, and credentials to transform their own lives as well as impact their families and communities. Our student population is composed of over 19,000 credit-bearing students enrolled in major areas of study (i.e., Business and Technology, Education and Language, Health Sciences, Humanities, Liberal Arts and English, Social Science, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and over 64,000 non-credit students enrolled in Adult and Continuing Education programs.

7 trainReflecting the demographic diversity of New York City, and especially of the borough of Queens, our students come from over 150 countries and speak more than 129 languages from 158 different countries. Roughly half of LaGuardia’s students are U.S. born and half bring international experiences with culture, language, education, and experience. They bring an enormous  range of knowledge, skills, and experiences to the College.

Over the past five years, LaGuardia’s enrollment of credit-bearing students has grown from 15,540 to 19, 289. LaGuardia’s student body is 58% female and 42% male with 53% of the student population falling into the traditional college-age group of 17-22. 26% of  LaGuardia’s students are between 23-29 and 16% are over the age of 30.

Upon their arrival at the college, 76% of LaGuardia’s students need Basic Skills coursework in math, 18% require Basic Skills coursework in English, and 26% need Basic Skills coursework in reading. The most popular major areas of study at the college include Health Sciences, Business and Technology, Liberal Arts and English, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. LaGuardia’s students have large aspirations upon graduation.  37% aspire to seek a Baccalaureate degree and 28% aspire to seek a Master’s degree or higher.
